Building the Skills to Operate More Independently
Independence takes practice.
Some of those skills come naturally. Others take time, experience, and practice to develop.
For parents, that can create a changing role. The support that was appropriate a few years ago may not be the support that helps now. When do you offer guidance? When do you step back? How do you create room for independence without simply leaving someone to figure everything out alone?
Growing independence isn't about suddenly needing less support. It's about developing the capability to do more for yourself.
That is what this work is designed to support.
Two Ways to Build Independence
There isn't one right way to become more independent. Sometimes it helps to have someone alongside you as you figure out what works. Sometimes you need a place to practice doing it.
One-on-One Coaching
“I want to get better at this.”
Sometimes it helps to have someone outside the usual circle of parents, teachers, coaches, and friends to talk things through with.
One-on-one coaching starts with what you want to accomplish. Together, we look at what's happening now, figure out what might work better, try practical approaches in real life, and adjust from there.
Coaching can focus on things like managing time, school, activities, priorities, organization, communication, follow-through, or preparing for greater independence.
Adulting Ground School™
“Knowing what I should do hasn't been enough.”
A structured, hands-on developmental experience where young adults practice the skills of independence, not simply hear more about them.
Participants work through realistic responsibilities, competing priorities, changing circumstances, communication, decisions, mistakes, feedback, and follow-through while the stakes are still manageable.
“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”
– Marcus Aurelius
Start a Conversation
You don't have to know which approach is the right fit before we talk.
We can start with what's happening now, what the young person wants to accomplish, and what kind of support might be useful.
Whether that leads to one-on-one coaching, Adulting Ground School™, or simply a better idea of what to look for next, the first conversation is just that — a conversation.
