Perpetual Motion

(Part 2 of 4: Living and Thriving in Ambiguity)

A young officer once told me,

“Sir, I think once we get through this phase, things will finally settle down.”

I told him,

“That’s true, if you don’t plan on going any further.”

He smiled.

Because he knew that wasn’t the plan.

And that’s the point.

 

We’re trained, subtly, repeatedly, to believe that instability will resolve.

That once we push through this deployment, this assignment, this promotion board, this season of pressure, we’ll arrive somewhere steady. Somewhere durable. Somewhere that finally feels predictable.

But ambiguity doesn’t end.

It reorganizes.

And if you are ambitious, it compounds.

We Don’t Live in Still Water

I’ve told you before, you’re not behind, you’re navigating ambiguity.

That feeling of lag.

That sense of slight disequilibrium.

That awareness that something is shifting faster than you can name it.

That’s not a defect.

It’s environmental reality.

We don’t live in still water.

We live in current.

Careers move.

Organizations shift.

Markets respond.

Families evolve.

You evolve.

Even if you stand still, the river does not.

The mistake isn’t feeling ambiguity.

The mistake is assuming it will someday disappear.

It’s Not Motion. It’s Dynamic Motion.

We adapt well to steady change.

When movement is consistent, we recalibrate. We find rhythm. We build pattern recognition.

What destabilizes us isn’t movement.

It’s dynamic movement.

Acceleration.

Deceleration.

A shift in direction.

A new variable that changes the meaning of everything else.

Ambiguity spikes not because the world is moving, but because the pattern of movement shifts.

And if you’re ambitious, you deliberately step into environments where that pattern will shift.

New responsibility doesn’t create second- and third-order effects.

It reveals them.

They were always there.

You just didn’t have the vantage point or the experience to sense them.

Growth doesn’t invent complexity.

It exposes it.

The Competence Paradox

There’s a paradox here.

The more competent you become, the less stable the world appears.

Not because things are falling apart.

But because you see more.

You’ve experienced enough system variance to recognize that patterns bend.

You’ve seen enough exceptions to know “always” is dangerous.

You’ve watched enough interactions cascade to understand that small inputs rarely stay small.

A novice feels confident because the system looks simple.

An expert feels cautious because the system looks dynamic.

The world didn’t become unstable.

You became perceptive.

That can feel like regression.

It isn’t.

It’s wisdom.

Stability Is Local

There are moments when things feel steady.

You hit stride.

The tempo smooths.

You level off.

It feels like equilibrium.

But in a dynamic system, equilibrium is temporary by definition.

The only thing that ever approaches a lack of ambiguity is the rearview mirror.

And even then, we reinterpret the past with information we didn’t have at the time.

The rearview mirror offers clarity, but no control.

By the time something is fully resolved, it is already complete.

Cruise altitude isn’t stillness.

It’s managed motion.

Weather shifts.

Variables accumulate.

New forces enter.

The system never stops moving.

Which means waiting for permanent stability isn’t strategic.

It’s futile.

You might get a lull.

You won’t get a final steady state.

You Don’t Graduate from Ambiguity

Every level introduces ambiguity appropriate to that level.

The junior officer wrestles with execution.

The mid-level leader wrestles with tradeoffs.

The senior executive wrestles with long-range risk and second-order consequences.

The complexity doesn’t disappear.

It scales.

The variables multiply.

The timelines extend.

The interactions compound.

You don’t graduate from ambiguity.

You trade one version for another.

And that trade is chosen.

Ambition is a decision to live inside ambiguity.

Not because you enjoy instability.

But because you intend to advance.

Inaction Is Still Interaction

Even if you decide to wait, to hold position, to delay, you are still interacting with the system.

Markets move.

People adjust.

Opportunities shift.

Perceptions evolve.

Choosing not to act is still a signal.

There is no observer seat in a dynamic environment.

You are always inside it.

The only question is whether you’re participating deliberately.

If ambiguity is continuous,

if the rate of change fluctuates,

if awareness increases perceived instability,

if stability is local,

then ambiguity isn’t evidence that you’re off track.

It’s evidence that you’re expanding.

And expansion inside a dynamic system doesn’t eliminate instability.

It redistributes it.

You are not broken because things feel unsettled.

You are moving.

And movement does not sit still.

 

Understanding the terrain is one thing.

Trusting yourself inside it is another.
